Young Drivers and Auto Insurance

Young Drivers: Your son or daughter is 16 and is ready to start driving. You have a number of points to consider prior to adding them to your policy. In Ontario we have a Graduated Licensing System.

G1 – Beginners License (New driver must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver at all times. Advise your broker immediately about any new driver, we want to be aware of any new drivers. No additional premium is charged at this time.

G2 – The new driver is now added to your policy and a premium will now be charged based on the vehicle that they will have access to.

G – It is advised that drivers proceed to the full G license as quickly as possible in order to obtain the best premium. The timing also depends on whether the new driver has completed a Driver Training Course.

Driver Training: We strongly advise that all new drivers take a Driver Training Course, if Young Drivers of Canada (others are also available.) The course should include in car and classroom training and must be recognized by The Ontario Safety League. Driver Training courses teach new drivers the proper techniques and avoids parents teaching bad habits that we have developed over time. It is important to realize that the premium charged for new drivers depends on whether or not they are male or female and the car that they drive. New drivers must also realize that their driving record can deteriorate very quickly due to tickets and accidents. In our discussions with clients we find that most parents make their children pay the additional cost of insurance. It tends to make their kids accept the responsibility of driving the car.
