As with all motorized vehicles you must have valid
insurance in order to operate your motorcycle on the
road. Some motorcycle and driver combinations are harder
than others to insure so it is best to call prior to
purchasing a motorcycle in order to prevent surprises!
There are several main areas of your motorcycle
insurance.
Liability - protects you from lawsuit should you
injure someone or something while using your motorcycle.
The usual limit here is a minimum of $1,000,000.
(Mandatory)
Accident Benefits – provides for payment of
medical bills disability and death benefits should you
be involved in an accident. (Mandatory)
Physical Damage – provides for protection if your
bike is stolen, damaged in an accident, vandalized etc.
(Optional)
Endorsements – extend coverage for things like
underinsured motorists and optional equipment.
Why is motorcycle insurance so expensive? The
largest component of the motorcycle premium is the
Accident benefits section. As you can imagine should
anything happen you are far less protected than if you
were in a car and therefore your injuries would be quite
a bit more severe. Because of this the statistics used
by insurance companies have shown a much greater cost in
this area.
To avoid high premiums buy “a cruiser type bike rather
than a “Super Sport” The race style high
performance bikes and due to this their premiums can
be up to 300% more than a similar powered “Cruiser”
If a bike cannot be road licensed (Pocket bikes,
mini-bikes, dirt bikes or off road) it usually cannot be
insured. If you are a member of an off road club they
sometimes may be able to provide you some protection.
Everyone loves a Harley especially the thieves so expect
to pay more for fire, theft and vandalism.
If it’s in your garage it’s NOT covered for theft by
your house insurance!
